Hi everybody,

As a newbie I am trying to do as much walking as I can, as I find it eases my ankles.

I like to walk wearing trainers, as many people do, but my very old and comfortable ones have shoe laces which I really struggle with. I can do them up but it is a really painful task.

I went to the 'trainer shop' to look at some options - maybe velcro or similar but couldn't see any I liked. The assistant said most youngsters these days don't do up the laces they simply tuck them in the shoe - so I thought I'll give that a go - sorry doesn't work for me the trainers rub and I like them to feel tight - so back to square one.

Being a engineer I thought there must be another good cheap way to do this - and so this is my solution which works brilliantly for me.

Leave the trainers exactly as they are with the laces - thread a thing called a Draw cord toggle lock on - pull tight - slip the toggle and that's it - tuck the remaining laces into the shoe.

They are so easy to do up and they open right up to make the shoe easy to get on

My wife had a couple of these toggles in her sewing box - but I notice my fleece uses them for the bottom draw cord and they are available from ebay

I did see from an earlier post that elastic laces are available form Amazon which is another good solution.

Anyway hope it helps someone.

I would add a photo of them to this article but I can't make the insert image work - can anybody tell me how to do it?

Welcome to the forum martin :)
Good tip .. just wondering if these are strong enough grip to support laces when walking , but i presume you have tested them ...:)
anyway here is the image ...

You need to host the images on a website such as Photobucket or Imageshack and then use the image tag in the format bar above the post to link to the image hosted off site .. more details HERE in this forum post

Thanks Rich,

Thank you for the welcome

Thank you for the info on inserting the image - I'll give it a go next time.

The toggles do grip very well and I have tested them out on several long walks. I like my trainers quite tight and with this device they stay tight. Of course it may be different with thinner laces or different toggles but I suspect it will work OK.

BigGrin What a great idea Martin, I tried the elastic laces but found they have too much give, when walking and not enough to get foot into shoe, so have followed the link and ordered some of the toggles.
Many thanks for posting and thanks to Rich also for the picture
Best wishes

I bought some trainers with a toggle already on in a little shop in Inverness, while on holiday up there. They`re really comfortable and easy to fasten.

Martin loved the pictures of the trainers, obviously well loved and worn, I bet they could tell a story or two.

I think they are about twenty years old - where does it go - at 10.5 stone I don't get through many - several half marathons, wonderful holidays with my lovely wife and five children, loads of dog walking, a bit of shed painting judging by the splashes, Lots of happy miles and now a wonderful new toggle era with plenty of cycling , walking and sitting in the swimming pool changing rooms.

My fingers, ankles, wrists and knees hurt like hell but life is brilliant.
